Congratulations to our 2009 Scholarship Winners: Christian Ortiz & Francisco Arroyo

Christina Ortiz graduated from Mountain View High School (El Monte) and will be attending University of California, Santa Barbara in the fall of 2009. She plans to major in mathematics. She is a young lady with a humble spirit, an inquisitive mind for knowledge and the determination to accomplish her goals. While at Mountain View she was active in the Harvey Mudd College Upward Bound Program, a college-preparedness program. In addition she was involved in her school's Color guard team where she served as captain, Associated Student Government and participated in the Gifted And Talented Education club. She has also volunteered with various community projects in the El Monte and worked as a tutor with the First 5 program's children. The Crystal C. Chavez Foundation looks forward to seeing Christina learn, grow and mature as she enters the world of college and of course, help her in any way we can.

Francisco E. Arroyo graduated from El Monte High School (El Monte) and will be attending University of California, Davis in the fall of 2009. He plans to major in psychology and in the sciences. Francisco is a principled-driven individual who values hard work, education, and contributing to community. We know he will be a shinning star for the city. During his time at El Monte High School, Francisco has participated in the Peer Support club, Ball Room dancing association, Anime Alliance club member of the Alpha Omega, a Christian club on campus. In addition he is a freelance tutor in the subject of mathematics, offering free or low cost tutoring to students. Francisco has also been involved with the Gifted And Talented Education since he was in third grade! His heart for service as led him to be a volunteer at the Jack Crippen Senior Center in El Monte and at the Our Lady Queen of Angels Church. The Crystal C. Chavez Foundation is proud to honor such an outstanding young man like Francisco, and are confident of his abilities to make an impact in his community and the world.

These students are the first to benefit from the Crystal C. Chavez Foundation Scholarship Program. The Foundation is blessed to touch the lives of the youth of the San Gabriel Valley and help light their path to his or her American Dream by going to college. Scholarship recipients were judged on community involvement, leadership ability, academic record and financial need. The recipients will be receiving a $500 scholarship check to be used for their college expenses. The Foundation plans to make available their Scholarship Program every year and increase the scholarship award amount, but we can’t do it alone, we need help through individuals like YOU! who share our passion in spreading the importance of education to our youth.
